The blog for today will have to begin a story from last night. I thought it was funny – Larry was aggravated! I guess I actually have to back up to our first night out, Harry who normally spends the night in his cage at home (as does Penny), objected to being in his cage since it wasn’t next to our bed as it is at home (our interpretation). So we decided we let him be free to sleep on our bed. Larry put his cage away into the storage area and he slept on our bed part of the nights, moving to the floor in the middle of the night. Last night, we put Penny in her cage as usual, Larry got to bed first, and I was still in the bathroom when I saw Harry head to the bedroom. I kept hearing him paw at the wood skirting at the bottom of our bed and I asked Larry if he was having trouble getting up on the bed. Larry said he wasn’t in there. I insisted I had seen him go in there and could hear him scratching. We started looking, he was no where to be found. We called him, no response. We looked in the living area, he wasn’t there. We looked in the closet, no Harry, no sound from him at all. This trailer isn’t that big, but he was no where to be found. Larry had been out with them and locked the door and Harry had been inside! Finally I asked Larry if he thought he could have gotten under the bed. That’s where he was! Our bed does not lift up for storage like many of the camper beds. The skirting surrounding the bed comes down to the floor on one side and the foot, but one side is up about 6 or 8 inches. Somehow he got under the skirting there, and up inside an area that houses some wiring and the mechanism that moves the bed slide in and out. Larry was afraid he’d chew the wiring and we wouldn’t be able to get the slide to come in. We tried calling him and he would not come out. Finally, Larry was able to get down on the floor and some cheese to get him to where he could reach his arm up in there to get him out. Like I said, I thought it was funny, but Larry did not! Needless to say the cage came back out that night and he slept in his cage after that.
We got up this morning and went into downtown Denver. We had a 1:00 appointment for a tour of the mint, but we thought there would be other things to do there. We knew the state capital building was there and had seen something about the Colorado History Museum and thought we could see both of those things before the mint tour. We did tour the Capital building, but found out the History Museum had been torn down and was being rebuilt.
I'll add a picture of us with the hile high mark that is on the capital steps.
So we got some lunch and waited around for the mint tour. That was a waste of time! They said they have the mint running 24 hours a day, 5 days a week. While we were there, hardly any machines running or anyone working other than the tour people. The conveyor belt with bins that were supposed to carry blank coins was running and empty. Finally they had some pennies come thru, but that was all we saw. They make all the coins there, quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies, but not today.
While at the Capital building, we picked up a brochure for the Leanin’ Tree Museum and Sculpture Gardens. We did go there after the mint and we were glad we did. Admission was free and it was really nice. I’m sure you have all heard of Leanin Tree greeting cards. They had 250 original oil paintings and 150 sculptures of all sizes. All the works of art had a western theme, Indians, cowboys and animals. They were just beautiful.
It was quite a bit of a drive to get to since it was in Boulder, but it was well worth going to.
