June 13, 2012 – Bonanza Gold Campground, Dawson City, Yukon Ter. Canada

It was cold this morning, 37 degrees. That even sounds better than the predictions on the news forecast of 4 for the morning low. But, their weather reports are given in Celsius not Fahrenheit degrees. It’s hard to get used to trying to guess our equivalent of what they report. We had had some pretty nice days while we were stranded near Watson Lake. I think we climbed in altitude yesterday as it got a lot cooler.

I wanted to give everyone a little more information about the expensive milk I bought the other day. I saw the letters UHT on it and the expiration date of Dec. 8, 2012. I looked it up. The letters stand for ultra high temperature and the article says it will keep for months on the shelf unrefrigerated, but after it’s opened it should be used like regular milk. I do have it in the frig, but we bought some regular milk to use for now, maybe we’ll need this UHT milk later. I don’t know if that’s why it was so expensive or not.

Larry Here – We got a good start this morning at 8. We drove 11 miles before the tire pressure alarm showed a low pressure on one tire. I had checked them this morning, so I knew they should be good. Pulled over and found that valve stem number 2 was leaking. Luckily it was right after we had started, so we turned around and went back 7 miles to a tire store. Hour and a half later we were on our way again. Road was pretty good. They mark the bad frost heaves with little flags for the most part. Some were a surprise though. When we opened up, we found that the sofa was moved 6 inches forward. I hate the surprises on the road.
Scenes from the road

Karen Again – Almost the whole way here the road was lined with beautiful wildflowers. There were some purple, pink and yellow (looked like Black-Eyed Susans); we also saw some the last several miles that looked like a wild rose. We are now in Dawson City in a campground that resembles a gravel parking lot. We bypassed it at first, thinking it didn’t look very good. We ended up coming back to it as the others were worse (more crowded). Dawson City was once a gold mining town, now they depend on tourism. We’ll go into town tomorrow and get a few pictures.
