We had a lot of rain last night, but it had mostly cleared up by morning. Before we went to bed last night we had had been told that there had been a mud slide up ahead and we wouldn’t be able to get through till later this morning. This morning there was talk of the road being closed. Larry got on the web site for the Yukon road conditions and it said the road was open in one lane at two points and there might be a delay of about 20 minutes at each sight. We decided to go for it, twenty minutes at two points didn’t seem so bad. We left the campground and drove about 14 miles and traffic was stopped. After 15 minutes or so, Larry got out and walked up to the front of the line (we were about 5th or 6th in line) and talked to some of the people up there. Someone said they had heard it might open about noon – it was then around 10:00. We sat there till around noon and by then the word was that the road and/or some bridges were washed out at four points. We finally started seeing some big equipment being taken in through the road block. At that point we decided we might as well try to get a sight at the campground that was right by the road block and just stay there for the night since it would have been at least a six hour drive under good conditions to our next destination.
Us in the line
We checked in here and there have been several others come in as well. They have a nice laundry facility and a few cable channels, but no internet service. Well, they do have internet service, but it was an extra $8.00, so we didn’t get it. I was able to do two loads of laundry, the sun is actually shining today and we have plenty to eat. There is even a little restaurant here, but we are going to grill some brats tonight. If they don’t get the road open by tomorrow we may have to drive back to Watson Lake to the grocery store for a few things. The latest word now is that there were six washouts, so it actually may be a couple of days.
